Identify the procedure before preparing your file

Registering a new vehicle, replacing a physical plate and transferring ownership of a used car are different needs. This informational guide separates first registration from re-registration and links to official channels. Synexis does not offer a registration service here: reading this guide or looking up a car's year does not submit an application.

Your situationWhat to check first
New vehicle not yet registeredOfficial registration procedure and technical and tax documents
Old-format number with province lettersWhether you qualify to apply for a new-format number
Buying a car already registered in SpainOwnership transfer; buying it does not itself mean a new number
Damaged or stolen plateReplacement of the physical plate; distinguish this from changing the number
Imported, historic or agricultural vehicleSpecific procedure; this table does not give its full requirements

The useful question is which detail or document needs changing. Keep the current number and documents, identify the reason and open the appropriate procedure page. A similarly named procedure may require a different file.

Online vehicle registration: documents and official channel

DGT explains how to register a new vehicle. Registration and obtaining the physical plates must be completed before driving, alongside applicable road-use conditions, including insurance. Technical documents and tax evidence form part of the preparation; the official page determines which evidence applies to your vehicle class and situation.

To begin online, check the accepted identification and current channel instructions. If another person acts for you, check representation requirements. Do not give your personal login credentials to an intermediary or treat a screenshot as a substitute for the official submission receipt.

Separate what you already have from what is missing. For example, having an invoice does not establish that all tax obligations have been completed; having a technical card does not mean a vehicle registration certificate has been issued. Record each check and keep the supporting documents together so you can respond to a request without repeating the entire file.

Re-registration: old-format plates and a new-format number

The official application for a new-format number covers vehicles whose old provincial letters do not correspond to the province where the applicant is currently registered as resident. It requires a new ITV technical card first, with the existing registration certificate and technical card provided to the inspection station.

Prepare the application, old and new ITV cards, registration certificate and the applicable fee and residence evidence. The electronic register accepts digital identification and documented representation. Submission does not automatically complete the procedure: DGT may require the physical documents to finalise it. Save the receipt and follow its notices.

The administrative fee, ITV inspection work and plates are separate costs. Check the applicable amount on the official page before paying; do not use an ownership-transfer quotation as a re-registration price.

Checklist to avoid preparing the wrong file

  1. I have identified whether I need registration, ownership transfer or a replacement plate.
  2. I have checked that the official page describes my case and vehicle type.
  3. I know which original documents to retain and which scanned copies to attach.
  4. I know who is submitting and how they must prove representation.
  5. I have separated the costs and kept each action's reference.
  6. I know where to check notices and which document will establish the result.

This checklist organises the work; it does not establish eligibility or replace the official list. If documents are missing or there is an issue, describe the question to the competent channel before choosing an option merely because it resembles your case.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stolen plate require re-registration?

DGT distinguishes replacing a stolen or damaged physical plate from applying for a new-format registration number. Check the documentation required by an authorised plate supplier; do not begin re-registration simply because the physical plate is missing.

Does changing a car's owner change its number plate?

Buying an already registered car and recording its new owner follows the ownership-transfer route. Read the ownership transfer guide to prepare the contract, tax evidence and application.

Does a registration-year lookup submit a procedure?

No. The registration-year tool retrieves the year from a queried date and has its own limits. To interpret that date, read the first-registration guide. It does not certify eligibility for re-registration.

What if the registration certificate is missing?

Check the reason in the registration certificate replacement and renewal guide. Losing the document, changing its details and changing the registration number are different procedures. The Spanish permiso de circulación is a vehicle document, distinct from a person's driving licence.
