Renew the registration certificate after a modification

Start with the technical evidence of the change and choose the registration-certificate renewal route for changed details. If you have simply lost the document and its details remain correct, you need a replacement. Neither procedure renews the driver's driving licence.

The DGT modification guidance places the ITV inspection before the new registration certificate. Before requesting help, identify which paper is missing: the ITV record describes technical characteristics, while the registration certificate is a separate document.

Renewal or replacement?

The DGT documentation page distinguishes loss, theft or damage from changes to vehicle characteristics or holder details. Replacing an ITV record is another procedure; the DGT offers a route for certain electronic eITV documents.

Actual reasonFirst question
Vehicle modificationIs the change recorded in technical paperwork?
Holder data changeWhich detail changed and what proves it?
Lost registration certificateIs another copy needed with the same details?
Lost ITV recordWhat kind of record is it and who issued it?

Write the reason in one sentence before opening an application. If you lost the certificate and also modified the vehicle, explain both facts to the channel handling your case. Choosing the shortest menu option while leaving out relevant facts is unlikely to help.

What changes after the ITV inspection

Renewing after a major modification

The paperwork often needs attention when the workshop has already finished its work. Put the current registration certificate, technical record and documents supplied after the intervention into one folder. Compare the number plate and VIN before scanning anything.

Ask the inspection station which technical evidence applies to your particular modification. Do not assume a checklist for another alteration is universal. Keep earlier versions for reference, but label them clearly so you do not upload an old document instead of the updated one.

A practical file list can record the issuer, document date and purpose of each attachment. This is particularly useful where several people have helped: the workshop may know the installation, while the person submitting the application needs to identify the finished paperwork.

Holder details or vehicle use changes

Renewing after a data change

Identify exactly whether the change concerns a name, surname, company name, vehicle use or another characteristic. The DGT changes page is the starting point for the relevant reason, paperwork and fee. Do not assume that a fee or exemption applying to one reason covers another.

Make a short comparison: old detail, correct detail and evidence supporting the correction. This helps catch transcription mistakes before submission. A sale changes ownership; it should not be described merely as correcting the seller's name.

Documents for your particular reason

As preparation, locate identification, the registration certificate, updated ITV documentation where relevant, evidence of the change and authority to represent the holder if applicable. Confirm the final list in the official procedure. Keep electronic identification credentials private even if someone assists you.

  1. Check the reason and supporting document.
  2. Open every attachment to confirm that it is readable.
  3. Separate technical evidence, identity and representation.
  4. Check the channel and fee before making payment.
  5. Retain the application receipt and monitor notifications.

Example: work finished, paperwork still pending

Sara receives a workshop invoice and assumes it updates every vehicle document. Before submitting a generic request, she asks which paperwork the ITV station produced and checks the details it records. She then prepares the registration-certificate renewal under the correct reason. The invoice helps her organise the file, but she does not treat it as an ITV record.

If Sara notices a VIN mismatch, she asks about it before submitting. Editing the scan herself would not correct the original record. She keeps the document and asks its issuer to clarify the discrepancy.

How to submit the request

Review the Synexis registration-certificate replacement and renewal service, which covers ITV-record changes, holder details and vehicle use. For Spanish registration or re-registration, use the separate registration guide.
