Car registration date and year: what a number plate can tell you
Distinguish first registration, Spanish registration and the registration certificate’s date. Check number-plate data against official documents.

Registration date: identify the event before interpreting the year
First registration, registration in Spain and the registration to which a certificate refers are not necessarily the same event. Before stating a car's age, check which field you are reading and its document. A recent Spanish number plate does not make an imported used vehicle new.
The Synexis lookup sends the number plate to retrieve data and extracts the year from the first-registration date returned by the service. It does not calculate a date from a letter sequence or issue a DGT age certificate. If there is no result or the data seems inconsistent, check official documents.
Which dates the registration certificate contains
Annex XIII of the General Vehicle Regulations distinguishes these fields among others. The Spanish permiso de circulación is the vehicle registration certificate, rather than a driving licence:
| Field | Detail | Useful reading |
|---|---|---|
| A | Registration number | Identifies the registration number on the document |
| B | First registration | Check the event described by the field |
| I | Registration to which the certificate refers | May concern a different document event |
Do not use an issue date, handover date or consulted record without checking its label. Different document dates may refer to different events; the difference alone does not show one is false.
An imported car
DGT explains registration of vehicles from the EU. A used car can acquire a Spanish plate after use in another country. The reduced report instructions describe first registration in Spain; that does not automatically establish its first registration anywhere in the world.
Fictional example: a car was first registered outside Spain in 2018 and acquired a Spanish registration in 2023. If seeking its original age, do not conclude it is five years younger from the second date. Neither date establishes its manufacture year. You need the document identifying the event of interest.
How to use a number-plate lookup carefully
- Copy the number plate of the actual car you are checking.
- Review the label and date shown in the result.
- Record the lookup date.
- Compare any discrepancy with the certificate and available documents.
- For use in a procedure, check what supporting evidence that procedure requires.
The tool displays data returned by a remote lookup. The legal reference for certificate fields does not validate every value returned by that service. It does not fill an absent date with an invented estimate or guarantee its response replaces an official document.
Year, date and manufacture: three questions
Do I only need an indicative year to organise things?
Reading the returned year can help if you know what it represents. Do not add a day or month that was not received. Investigate a mismatch with the document before using the result.
Do I need to establish an administrative date?
Review the appropriate certificate, report or official document for the case. A private tool screenshot does not itself create administrative certification.
Do I need to know when the car was manufactured?
Do not infer manufacture from registration without other supporting evidence. They are different events even if close together for a particular vehicle.
Common mistakes
- Treating a Spanish plate's year as the car's worldwide age.
- Confusing first registration with the current certificate's date.
- Claiming the service calculates a date from plate letters.
- Using returned data as an official certificate.
- Copying a date without identifying its label or country.
Begin with the question you need to answer. You can then choose between a lookup for planning and official evidence for a procedure.
Sources and next steps
Official sources corroborated on 1 October 2026; linked official documents are in Spanish:
- General Vehicle Regulations.
- Instruction VEH 2025/02: reduced report.
- Registering a vehicle from the EU.
Use the registration-year lookup to see the year extracted from the returned date. To verify an administrative detail, compare the relevant document or vehicle report.
If you need to obtain a registration or change an old-format number to a new one, read the vehicle registration and re-registration guide. Looking up a date and applying for those procedures are different capabilities.
