Car ownership transfer in Spain: documents and steps
Prepare an ordinary used-car purchase in Spain by separating the sale contract, tax, DGT application and new registration document.

Car ownership transfer in Spain: define your purchase first
This guide covers an ordinary sale of a used vehicle already registered in Spain. It separates agreement and handover from recording the buyer as its new registered owner. Imports, first registration, inheritance, donations and other special cases have different instructions. Use the relevant official procedure if your purchase falls outside this scope.
The Spanish terms help you recognise the documents: cambio de titularidad is the ownership change, permiso de circulación is the registration document, and tarjeta ITV is the technical inspection document. A sale contract is a separate agreement. Keep each document under its own name so that a receipt or technical card is not mistaken for the final ownership result.
Before signing: check the vehicle and the seller
The DGT used-vehicle buying guide recommends checking the vehicle's administrative situation before buying. Compare the seller's identity and authority with the documents, and match the vehicle identifiers. An administrative report does not replace a mechanical inspection.
Clarify a recorded restriction rather than guessing its effect. A financing reservation, attachment and immobilisation order are not interchangeable. The official transfer instructions distinguish their requirements. Ask for the supporting documents and resolve the applicable condition before assuming that payment or a signed contract clears it.
Agree the sale price, date, time, payment evidence and handover arrangements. Check that the contract describes the actual vehicle and both parties; retain complete signed copies. If someone acts for a party, establish their authority instead of treating possession of an identity copy as permission to act.
Documents and steps for an ordinary transfer
According to the DGT transfer procedure, the buyer must request the ownership change within 30 days of signing the contract. Prepare the application, identification, sale agreement, applicable tax justification and official fee. Representation is possible with the required authority. Check the current document list and channel for your situation.
| Stage | What to organise | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Sale agreement | Correct parties, vehicle and complete signed contract | That the registered owner has changed |
| Tax preparation | Competent tax authority and payment, exemption or other applicable justification | That the DGT application has been submitted |
| Application | Required documents, fee and authorised applicant | Automatic completion of the procedure |
| Follow-up | Filing receipt, reference and responses to requests | A guaranteed completion date |
| Result | Check the issued registration document and its details | Mechanical condition or permission to ignore insurance and inspection requirements |
Keep the filing reference with the documents you actually submitted. If a request asks for a clearer copy, answer through that case rather than opening another application without checking the instructions. Make a note of what remains pending and who needs to supply it.
The buyer's transfer and the seller's sale notification are separate actions. Agree responsibilities explicitly, then keep evidence of each action; one party's receipt is not proof that the other party has completed their task.
Tax, official fee and assistance charges
The transfer fee, purchase tax and a provider's charges are different costs. Do not compare an estimated tax result with a complete transfer quote. For tax, confirm the competent administration and the treatment of your transaction; the seller's location alone is not a reliable instruction for choosing the buyer's tax procedure.
The ITP calculator estimates purchase transfer tax using the entered vehicle, fiscal information and buyer location. It does not file or pay the tax and does not calculate every cost of the purchase. Keep its inputs and result if you use it for planning, then confirm the applicable rules before a real tax submission.
If you use a provider, ask for the total and a breakdown, the documents included, who files, how both parties sign and how outstanding actions are communicated. Do not share your personal official-login credentials; check the required representation instead.
A handover checklist
- Vehicle identifiers and the seller's authority are clear.
- Administrative warnings and any missing documents have been explained.
- Contract, price, payment evidence and handover time are agreed.
- Buyer and seller know which separate actions they must complete.
- The applicable tax process and DGT filing channel have been checked.
- Each party keeps their own signed documents and references.
- Insurance, inspection and other circulation conditions are checked before driving.
This is an organisational checklist, not clearance for a particular car. A successful ownership change does not itself make driving lawful if the vehicle lacks the required insurance or valid inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Can the application be started online?
The official DGT page explains electronic identification and representation for its online channel. Review those instructions for your case. Starting online, signing or paying is not the same as receiving the new registration document.
Does downloading a sale contract change ownership?
No. The sale contract generator prepares a PDF from entered information. Review it before signing; tax and the registration application remain separate tasks.
Does Synexis offer transfer assistance?
The existing vehicle transfer service explains its scope and account requirements. It provides a guided case for vehicle, parties, tax and documents. Review the available workflow and quoted amount before payment, then attend to any pending signatures or requests. Official registration remains the responsibility of the competent administration.
Is this a guide to importing a foreign car?
No. It starts with a vehicle already registered in Spain. First registration and import documentation require their own official instructions; a purchase contract does not make this ordinary-transfer checklist suitable for those cases.
