Comparison of a reduced and a detailed vehicle report

DGT reduced vehicle report: free, with a limited scope

The official reduced report is free. It provides an initial check of certain data and the administrative status reported by DGT; it is not a mechanical examination or a purchase guarantee. The official headquarters distinguishes the reduced report from detailed reports, which have their own fee.

For the reduced online route, you need an accepted means of identification and the registration number; DGT also offers access through miDGT. The 060 telephone route described for reports does not include the reduced report. Use the official link and check the current instructions before starting.

How to prepare your enquiry

  1. Check the registration number against the vehicle documents.
  2. Open the DGT headquarters from an official address, without giving login credentials to the seller.
  3. Select the reduced report and an available identification system.
  4. Check that the result relates to the vehicle you asked about.
  5. Save the date and report to compare any further information later.

Identification gives you access to the service; it does not mean you should send credentials through a chat. If the channel returns an error, consult its instructions or navigate through the official headquarters again. An access problem is not evidence of a problem with the vehicle itself.

What to do with the reported status

The DGT instruction on reduced reports explains the administrative-status information. A result with warnings or issues does not necessarily identify the exact nature of each restriction. The useful next step is to obtain more detail and clarify the situation, rather than guess the cause.

Initial resultPrudent next stepConclusion you should not draw
No issues reportedCompare documents and the vehicle's actual conditionThe car has no mechanical faults
WarningsRead the scope and get more information if neededEvery warning prevents an ownership transfer
IssuesObtain details and clarify their effectA generic cause explains the whole file

The enquiry date matters. If a matter is resolved afterwards, ask for the supporting documents and check the current situation. Do not alter an old report or present it as a new enquiry.

Reduced and full reports: a useful comparison

The reduced report supports an initial check, including first registration in Spain. The full report covers more technical and encumbrance information according to the records available. Before requesting a different report, decide what question you need to answer: whether the vehicle can be transferred, a technical detail, an encumbrance or another administrative issue.

Do not assume you will receive a complete accident or maintenance history, or guaranteed true mileage. A recorded detail can guide a check; it does not replace an inspection or prove everything that has happened to the car. The report on vehicles registered in the applicant's name also has a separate ownership scope and should not be confused with a registration-number enquiry. Ownership or authorised representation conditions apply to that report.

Example: a warning appears before a purchase

Nora requests a reduced report for a car she wants to buy and sees a warning. She does not conclude that the seller is lying or that the car can simply be transferred. She obtains detailed information, asks the seller for relevant documents and compares the dates. If an earlier administrative matter needs resolving, she arranges that before finalising the handover.

If the reduced report had shown no issues, Nora would still arrange the mechanical inspection and review the contract. The example illustrates two separate checks: administrative records and the car's physical condition.

Common mistakes

  • Paying a service because you think the official reduced report always costs money.
  • Confusing a warning with a full explanation of its cause.
  • Treating “no issues” as a commercial guarantee.
  • Reading first registration in Spain as an imported car's first registration anywhere in the world.
  • Requesting several report types without knowing what information is missing.

Choose a report that answers your question. Keep the reduced report as an initial check and obtain more information when you need details, understanding the scope of the report or the private service you purchase.
