Sale notification and ownership transfer: each party’s role
Organise the seller’s notification and buyer’s ownership change, with dates, receipts and an example explaining why notification is not retroactive.

Sale notification or ownership transfer: different actions
The seller notifies the sale; the buyer applies for the ownership change. Notification does not issue the buyer's new vehicle registration certificate or replace their transfer. DGT explains that notification takes effect on the day it is made, rather than retrospectively from contract signing.
Organise both tasks when selling and keep their receipts separately. Handing over the keys does not prove either action has been filed. In Spanish, notificación de venta means sale notification and cambio de titularidad means ownership change.
What each document establishes
| Document or action | Purpose | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Signed contract | Records the agreement and details | Does not itself register the buyer |
| Sale notification | Seller communicates the sale | Does not replace the transfer |
| Transfer application | Buyer starts the ownership change | Filing is not a completed decision |
| New registration certificate | Resulting ownership-change document | Does not establish mechanical condition |
The General Vehicle Regulations distinguish the ordinary obligations: seller notification within ten days and buyer application within thirty. These are action deadlines rather than processing promises. Check specific instructions if the transfer is outside an ordinary sale.
Seller's preparation
Keep a legible copy of the contract or invoice and the required details. Check date, time, parties' identities and vehicle. Organise notification promptly through the applicable official channel and keep its receipt. Do not assume filing has happened because the buyer says “the gestoría is dealing with it”. A gestoría is a provider of administrative assistance.
Notification does not extinguish every civil or tax liability or erase earlier notices. If a fine or notice arrives, review its issuing authority, dates and particular case instead of responding with a universal conclusion.
Buyer's preparation
Gather tax evidence and other documents for the transfer. Keep the filing receipt and respond to issues in the case. The seller's notification does not deliver your new registration certificate or release you from applying for the change.
Before driving, check the vehicle's documents and required conditions. Neither the contract nor an application receipt grants general permission to drive in every circumstance.
Example: notification after the sale
Ana sells her car on day 3 and notifies the sale on day 7. She keeps the contract and receipt. If she receives a notice concerning day 5, she should not claim the day 7 notification automatically erases what happened earlier. She checks the issuer, event and dates, then uses the case channel to supply relevant documents.
Meanwhile, the buyer still needs to apply for the ownership change. Ana's action and the buyer's serve different functions. The dates are fictional and do not resolve a particular penalty or liability.
Shared handover checklist
- Both parties keep the same complete contract.
- The time of vehicle handover is identified.
- Each person knows which action they must carry out.
- Responsibility for payment is distinguished from responsibility for filing.
- Receipts are stored with their dates and references.
- A way to communicate issues is agreed without sharing login credentials.
Common mistakes
Does notification mean the buyer is already the registered owner?
No. Distinguish notification, application and administrative result. Check which document you have rather than its informal title in a message.
Does notifying now remove every earlier fine?
You cannot infer that from notification. Its administrative effects are not retrospective and a notice requires examination of its circumstances.
Is waiting for the other party enough?
Organise your own action and keep proof. Relying on the other party's promise leaves your task unevidenced. If a problem appears, identify the case and seek a specific response, avoiding duplicate applications without knowing the cause.
