How to check a car for debts and liens before buying in Spain
Check debts and liens before buying a Spanish car: choose evidence, compare documents and know when to pause.

Check a Spanish car before paying a deposit
Identify the vehicle and obtain recent administrative information before paying a deposit. Separate two questions: what the records show, and what that entry means for your proposed purchase. Start with the number plate and compare the vehicle identification number on the car with its documents.
A cropped photograph of an old report is a poor basis for a decision. Ask for the full document, its date and the seller's proposed solution to any issue. A lower price may change your negotiation, but it does not establish that a restriction has been removed.
What each report checks
The DGT offers different report types, including reduced, complete and charges reports. The official reduced report is free; choose the appropriate detailed option when you need more information. None is a complete accident history or a mechanical diagnosis.
Write down the question you need answered before ordering anything: which entry is involved, whether a particular restriction has been removed, or whether the paperwork matches. This makes it easier to request useful evidence rather than collect several documents answering different questions.
| Purchase question | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Is this the advertised car? | Match plate and VIN across car and paperwork |
| Is there an administrative warning? | Read the result and obtain detail if needed |
| Has an issue been resolved? | Compare supporting evidence and a current check |
| Is the car mechanically sound? | Arrange an independent inspection |
Debts, attachment, immobilisation and retention of title
The official buying guidance distinguishes retention of title, attachment and immobilisation orders. They do not all have the same effect. An entered retention-of-title restriction requires cancellation or an accepted alternative; attachment and immobilisation need their specific effects checked, and immobilisation may prevent use even where a transfer is processed.
Do not treat “there is still finance” as a complete answer. Ask the seller to identify the actual entry. A loan balance and the corresponding recorded position should be checked separately, especially when the seller says the last payment has already been made.
Create four columns in your notes: issue found, person supplying evidence, outstanding action and final check. Avoid marking an issue resolved merely because someone says they submitted an application. Keep that receipt and check the outcome afterwards.
What you can check free of charge
The reduced official report is an initial route, but access to it does not make every detailed check free. Our reduced-report guide explains how to prepare this first step without confusing the official option with a paid service.
Sort documents by date. If you receive two reports, compare their plates before their contents; different results may reflect different consultation dates. Where a page is missing, request the complete file before making a judgement. A screenshot that hides the heading can also hide which type of document you are reading.
What to do before signing
- Compare the seller's identity with the vehicle paperwork.
- Obtain recent information and read the full entries.
- Request the evidence linked to each unresolved issue.
- Agree which matters must be settled before payment.
- Check the result as well as retaining the submission receipt.
- Keep the inspection, test drive and contract review as separate tasks.
For example, Elena finds a car whose seller supplies a receipt for the final finance instalment. Before paying a deposit, she asks whether a retention-of-title entry exists and which document will show its removal. If that cannot be clarified, she pauses. The receipt helps her ask the next question; she does not use it to fill gaps in the evidence.
Choose the next step
For a registry question, compare the registry extract and DGT report. For traffic-register information, review the scope of the Synexis vehicle report. Once the position is clear, prepare the ownership transfer. Ordering a report does not start or guarantee a transfer, and it does not replace your decision about the vehicle itself.
