Driver tachograph card renewal

Distinguish renewal, changes and replacement, check the applicable deadline and apply to the competent autonomous community authority.

Which procedure applies to each reason

Renewal addresses the approaching expiry of a valid card. A change updates details; replacement addresses loss, theft, damage or malfunction. Do not interchange reasons, as deadlines, evidence and handling of the previous card differ.[3][4]

Spain's autonomous communities are responsible for issuing tachograph cards. Find the body and channel appropriate to your residence and confirm the form, fee, delivery and any appointment there.[1]

The Synexis form accepts expiry, changed details, loss and theft of a driver card. Sign in, complete the details, upload documents and capture your signature before payment; then review the amount and check application status. For damage, malfunction, first issue, exchange or other cards, confirm the channel and coverage before starting.

More information to consider

Renewal for expiry

The EU Regulation requires renewal to be requested at least 15 working days before expiry. The Spanish order uses different wording for timing; apply the European deadline and confirm how the competent regional channel operates.[4][3]

Replacement following an incident

Replacement must be requested within 7 calendar days of card loss, theft, damage or malfunction. Provide the details and evidence required by the rules and authority.[4][3]

Changes of details

The Spanish order sets one month to request changes when details recorded on the card change. Check which document evidences the change and which authority should receive it.[3]

Cases covered and different applications

Select the actual reason and keep evidence of the date it arose.

When it applies

  • Request renewal before the driver card expires and respect the European minimum of 15 working days in advance.[4]

  • Request replacement if the card is lost, stolen, damaged or malfunctions, within the prescribed 7 calendar days.[4][3]

  • Request a change if administrative details that must appear on the card change, and submit within the one-month period regulated in Spain.[3]

When it does not apply

  • An expired or invalid card does not become permission to drive because an application has been sent. Check the applicable rules before starting a journey.

Costs before providing documents

Confirm the price and scope for your case before purchasing: applicable administrative fees, management fees and taxes are detailed in the proposal or payment step. No fixed total is published here.

Identification and documents to confirm

The ministry form includes useful fields for preparing the application, but contains legacy references and does not prove that a version or channel is current in every autonomous community.

  • Personal and contact details, identity document, address and residence sufficient to determine the competent authority.[2][1]

  • Driving licence and its identifying details, together with current card information where available.[2]

  • A photograph and signature meeting the current regional channel's specifications; do not automatically reuse instructions from an old form.[2][1]

  • The previous card for renewal or changed details, and a police report, declaration or technical evidence for loss, theft, damage or malfunction, as appropriate.[2][3]

How to renew a tachograph card

This sequence describes the official procedure. The Synexis form collects details, documents, signature and payment; card issuance is the competent regional authority's responsibility.

  1. 1

    Identify the procedure and reason

Check whether renewal, changed details, replacement, first issue or exchange applies, and record the expiry or incident date.[2][3]

  2. 2

    Find the regional authority

Select the competent body in the autonomous community and use its accepted electronic office, register or appointment route for tachograph cards.[1]

  3. 3

    Prepare evidence

Gather identification, residence, driving licence, photograph, signature, current card and evidence of the reason in the format confirmed by the current channel.[2][1]

  4. 4

    Submit and pay where applicable

Review the details, submit within the deadline, pay only the fee specified by the authority and keep the complete receipt.

  5. 5

    Respond to review and production

The authority reviews the application and handles issuance. An incomplete request may require additional documents before the card is produced.[1]

  6. 6

Collect the card and handle the previous one

Follow regional delivery or collection instructions and return or invalidate the previous card when the rules or authority require it.[3][1]

Fee, production and delivery

Amounts and payment methods depend on the regional channel and must be checked before submission.

Regional fee

Check the charge, amount and payment form at the competent electronic office. This guide does not apply one region's fee to the whole country.

Replacement deadlines

The Spanish order provides for replacement issuance within 5 working days; the European rule sets an 8 working day limit to deliver a replacement card after receiving a detailed request. These are the authority's replacement deadlines, not delivery dates for a renewal ordered through Synexis. Confirm how they apply to your case through the competent channel.[3][4]

Delivery and tracking

Confirm whether the card is collected or posted and keep proof of submission to the authority. Synexis application status lets you track the service, but issuance and receipt dates depend on the authority and delivery method.

Rules that must be distinguished

  • Advance renewal application

Apply the European requirement to request renewal at least 15 working days before expiry. The Spanish order's wording about a maximum of fifteen working days before expiry must not be used to delay the application.[4][3]

  • Driving during replacement

In the cases and conditions covered by the European rule, driving without a card is allowed for up to 15 calendar days, or longer only where necessary to return the vehicle to its base. You must prove you cannot use or present the card and make the required records or printouts; this is not a general authorisation.[4]

Frequently asked questions about driver cards

Identify the expiry date, gather driver documents and find your autonomous community's transport authority. Confirm its channel, form, fee and delivery. Issuance is the autonomous communities' responsibility, not the DGT's; loss, theft or failure require checking replacement rather than renewal for expiry.[1]

At least 15 working days before expiry under the European Regulation. Do not wait until the final days, and verify actual submission at the regional electronic office.[4]

The competent autonomous community authority. Find the body according to your residence and confirm its channel, form, fee and delivery.[1]

Do not assume the application extends its validity. If renewal is late, immediately ask the authority and your transport manager before driving.

Request replacement within 7 calendar days of loss or theft, provide the required evidence and keep the receipt. The same timing rules also cover damage or malfunction.[4][3]

Check which detail changes, which authority covers your new residence and whether changed details or an exchange applies. In Spain, a change of details must be requested within one month; the competent channel will confirm the documents.[3][1][2]

Only under the European conditions: up to 15 calendar days, extended only where necessary to return to base, with evidence of the impossibility and the required records or printouts. Confirm your case before driving.[4]

Confirm the reason, deadline and authority

Check expiry or the incident, gather evidence and use the current form and channel of the competent autonomous community.
