Reviewing a generic driving licence and an expiry-date calendar

Renewing a driving licence: begin with validity and the official route

For an ordinary renewal, check the licence expiry date and review the route through an authorised driver medical assessment centre or DGT with the required fitness report. DGT explains renewal and allows you to begin three months before expiry; renewing early does not shorten its validity.

You must not drive with an expired licence while it remains unrenewed. A future appointment or receipt is not a general authorisation to drive. If the issue is suspension or loss of all points, do not treat it as an ordinary renewal.

Where to renew your driving licence: four decisions

1. Confirm what you need

Check whether the document is approaching expiry, has already expired or has been lost. Losing a valid licence may call for a replacement; requesting a copy does not extend its validity. Also record the category and any circumstance affecting the procedure. EU/EEA licences have their own official route; do not automatically apply ordinary Spanish-licence instructions to them.

2. Choose an accepted route

The official page describes the authorised centre that can carry out the assessment and manage renewal, and the DGT alternative with a fitness report. A questionnaire on a private website does not replace the in-person medical assessment. Confirm that the centre and service you choose follow the official process.

3. Check the current document requirements

Read the requirements for your selected channel and ask what to bring. Do not copy an old identical list for every licence and channel: documentation and exceptions for photographs or associated forms can vary. Resolve missing items before attending to avoid a visit that cannot complete the procedure.

4. Separate costs and follow-up

Ask for a breakdown separating the centre's assessment and handling costs from the applicable DGT fee. Fee exemptions or reductions do not automatically make the medical centre's work free. Save the reference and documents you receive. Do not assume guaranteed postal delivery because one stage has been completed.

Personal preparation checklist

  • I have checked the expiry date on the document and its category.
  • I know whether I am renewing or requesting a replacement copy.
  • I have read the current page for my chosen channel.
  • I have confirmed which documents and assessment are needed.
  • I understand what the quoted cost includes.
  • I know which document I will receive and how to check progress.

This list helps prepare the procedure; it is not a universal official requirements list. You do not need to enter your medical history, licence number or login credentials in Synexis to read this guide.

Example of planning ahead

Óscar notices his licence expires in two months. He checks renewal instructions and arranges a visit to an authorised centre. He confirms documentation and costs before attending and keeps the documents issued afterwards. He does not wait until the licence expires or assume that renewing early shortens the next period.

If he discovered that his licence was suspended, he would check that specific situation rather than use the same checklist as if a medical assessment were enough. The example explains planning; it does not assess fitness or promise approval.

Common mistakes

Confusing the medical assessment with retaking the driving test

Ordinary renewal is not a general retake of the driving test. It also does not guarantee a favourable fitness assessment: follow the procedure appropriate to your circumstances.

Driving because renewal is “under way”

Check the validity and scope of the valid document you hold. A booked visit does not replace a licence.

Choosing the wrong service

A driving licence authorises a person to drive; the vehicle registration certificate is a document for the vehicle. Replacing a registration certificate does not renew a driving licence. This guide directs you to official channels and does not open a Synexis driving licence renewal service.
