Car tax, insurance and market values: the differences
Three valuation purposes and a fictional example: the tax tool does not calculate insurance compensation or the real sale price.

Car value: first clarify why you need the figure
A tax reference, market price and insurance value can differ because they answer different questions. Identify the purpose before filing tax, negotiating a sale or examining compensation. Do not rename a figure to fit the outcome you want.
Synexis calculates a tax-reference value from supplied details. It should not be presented as an insurance valor venal calculator, mechanical appraisal or guaranteed sale price. Valor venal is a Spanish valuation term whose meaning in an insurance case depends on the policy and circumstances.
Three contexts to keep separate
| Context | Question | Documents to review |
|---|---|---|
| Tax | Which reference and rules apply to tax? | Legislation, identified vehicle and competent administration |
| Market | What price can be agreed for this particular car? | Comparables and actual vehicle condition |
| Insurance | What valuation applies to the covered case? | Policy, conditions and damage assessment |
The names do not allow automatic conversion. A policy may define its own criteria and conditions. Read what the term means in that contract instead of importing a definition from another insurance product.
Tax reference
The 2026 average-price order regulates tables and usage percentages for its tax purposes. The ITP law establishes taxable-base rules that cannot be reduced to calling any declared price “tax value”. A table reference alone does not confirm the regional rate, exemption or self-assessment result.
When calculating a reference, check vehicle variant, characteristics and the date used. A wrong model selection can change the figure without changing the actual car. Consulting the legislation also does not constitute an audit of every catalogue row or the tool's remote result.
Market price
For negotiation, organise comparables and examine their similarity: variant, condition, declared mileage and offer circumstances. An advertisement gives an asking price; it does not itself prove a completed sale at that amount. A tax reference does not include an inspection of your particular car.
Insurance valuation
Articles 26 to 28 of the Insurance Contract Act place insured-interest and damage valuation in their contractual context and set the applicable rules. They do not automatically equate a tax table with compensation. Review policy conditions and the particular case instead of inferring an insurance amount from a tax tool.
Example with three fictional figures
Imagine a EUR 4,000 tax reference, EUR 5,200 negotiated price and EUR 3,700 contractual insurance reference. These are invented figures explaining their purposes, with no real appraisal, policy or offer behind them.
Neither the smallest nor largest is “correct” for everything. Verify tax rules for tax, assess the particular vehicle and agreement for sale, and read the contract and loss circumstances for insurance. No universal percentage converts EUR 4,000 into EUR 3,700 either.
Checklist for requesting or using a valuation
- Record the figure's purpose.
- Identify the car and reference date.
- Record its method, document or generating tool.
- Check assumed and confirmed inputs.
- Separate calculated reference, asking price and expert appraisal.
- Keep documents explaining the result.
Common mistakes
Using tax value as compensation, treating an advertisement as a completed transaction and presenting a calculator result as an individual appraisal are different mistakes. Check context before assuming differing figures indicate an error. A difference explained by different purposes does not establish which figure your procedure requires.

The tax-reference value tool serves that tax context using supplied data. For insurance, review your policy and case valuation; for selling, compare relevant offers.
