Extending temporary vehicle deregistration in Spain: expiry and next steps
Check temporary deregistration expiry, prepare an official extension and distinguish submission from its outcome.

Start with the current expiry date
Locate your current temporary-deregistration paperwork and check its expiry before requesting an extension. Extending the status differs from reactivating the vehicle for use. This guide points to the official Spanish channel; the Synexis temporary-deregistration service remains Coming soon and cannot be purchased here.
Choosing the extension procedure
If the end of the period is approaching, read the procedure options before attempting a new deregistration. Establish the vehicle's recorded position first, then decide which result you need. The fact that a car has remained parked does not answer the administrative question.
How long the status lasts
The DGT temporary-deregistration guidance sets a maximum of one year for the ordinary case, with extensions possible. Agricultural vehicles have no annual limit and can remain deregistered without extensions until reactivation. Older deregistrations also warrant checking the actual recorded position.
How long does temporary deregistration last?
Use the dates in your documents rather than the purchase date or the last day you drove the car. If you cannot identify the expiry, make that your first question to the official channel instead of choosing an approximate anniversary.
| Evidence you have | What to check |
|---|---|
| Deregistration document | Vehicle, date and scope |
| Application receipt | Whether a later outcome exists |
| Older paperwork | Current position before calculating dates |
| Special vehicle category | Instructions for that category |
How to review expiry
Put the deregistration document and subsequent communications in one folder. Sort them by date and distinguish an application from its result. If someone applied on your behalf, request the full files so you can identify both what was submitted and what happened afterwards.
Which date should you use for a car?
Set an early reminder and another to check the outcome. Where the date is unclear, ask through the official channel before assuming that the status continues. Leaving a car unused and having it administratively deregistered describe different things.
When comparing several files, label each by its purpose. A payment receipt, submission receipt and recorded outcome may all matter, but they answer different questions. Keep them together without substituting one for another.
Apply for an extension through the official channel
The DGT instruction on voluntary temporary deregistration describes annual extension requests during the two months before expiry, with automatic reactivation otherwise. Check the current entry point and conditions through the DGT procedure page before submitting.
As preparation, locate identity documents, vehicle details, previous paperwork and evidence of representation where someone applies for the holder. Confirm the actual document list and any fee for your case; do not automatically reuse a receipt from an unrelated procedure.
- Enter through the official temporary-deregistration page.
- Confirm that you selected extension for the correct vehicle.
- Review holder details and notification contacts.
- Attach the requested evidence, sign and save the receipt.
- Monitor communications and the subsequent outcome.
Closing the browser does not establish that submission succeeded. Download the receipt and open it before leaving. If an error appears, keep the message for support rather than repeatedly submitting without knowing whether an earlier request was registered.
Example: a restoration project runs late
Luis intended to finish restoring his car this winter, but the work is delayed. He checks the deregistration document, reviews the extension window and prepares his file. He does not calculate expiry from the last day he drove it or assume the workshop automatically handles the administrative status.
After submission, he keeps the receipt with the earlier paperwork and checks the outcome. If his plans change, he treats returning the vehicle to use as a separate decision. An extension does not inspect the car or prepare it mechanically for the road.
What to check before returning to use
Check administrative status, ITV, insurance and physical condition through the relevant channels before using the vehicle again. If it has been standing for a long time, plan how to inspect and move it without assuming you can simply drive it anywhere.
The Synexis temporary-deregistration information page retains its Coming soon status. Use the official channel linked above to request an extension and keep the paperwork showing its outcome.
